  • Jared Smith, a recognized expert in the field of Voice-over IP (VoIP) and currently the project leader for the Fedora Project, has been named keynote speaker for the Utah Open Source Conference in October.

One of the nation’s rising open source software conferences, UTOSC will be held from Oct. 7-9 at the Miller campus of Salt Lake Community College.

“We are fortunate to have a speaker of Jared Smith’s caliber address this year’s conference,” said Clint Savage, the chief executive of the Utah Open Source Foundation, which hosts the conference. “In fact, Smith leads an outstanding list of speakers who are coming to Salt Lake City for UTOSC.”

Smith will be speaking on ‘Swimming upstream: How Linux distributions help the entire community‘.

Smith, who has held a number of roles in his career including programmer and system administrator, is a published author and holds a B.S. Degree in Computer Engineering from Utah State University.

As project leader for the Fedora Project, Smith directs the operations of the Red Hat-based Linux distribution that is free and available to the public.

Nearly 60 presentations will be given in the three-day UTOSC event, and UTOSC has also released the list of presentations here: http://2010.utosc.com/presentation/schedule/

  • This Monday marked the beginning of the final week to submit papers for the 2010 Utah Open Source Conference.

If you miss this final chance to submit a paper you may well miss out on your opportunity to present!

In addition to being a presenter there are several other opportunities to contribute to the Utah Open Source Conference, such as volunteering your time or conducting a BoF get together.

Check out http://blog.utos.org and http://2010.utosc.com for all the latest opportunities to help out this year!

  • Time goes by quickly, so quickly in fact that top priorities get set to the side and suddenly become missed opportunities. Fortunately submitting a proposal for a presentation at the 2010 Utah Open Source Conference doesn’t have to be one of them!

The deadline for paper submission has been extended until August 1st, 2010, just in time to sit down inside a nice cool coffee shop, sip some of the great local roast and think about what to share with the community.

Really it only takes a minute or two to place a submission and you might find it so easy and fun that you submit more then one.

Don’t worry about not having a full presentation prepared, all that needs to be submitted by the deadline is the proposal, a basic outline of what would be presented to the community at the conference. The next step is easy: sit back, relax and wait to hear if your proposal was selected by vote for the conference. Once selected the entire presentation(s) should be laid out and created.

Don’t have anything to talk about? That’s not what I’ve heard!

Topics can be as wide ranging as are the members of the Utah Open Source community at large (and that is pretty gosh darn diverse!) and should include a variety of experience levels. While one presenter may submit a presentation on Building a Better Community Through Statistics another (and an excellent presentation I attended in 2009,) might be Advanced GIMP: The Digital Diet.

So don’t be afraid to submit a proposal to talk about your favorite open source program(s) that just does silly things or maybe does nothing at all!

Has anyone ever submitted a presentation on an open source pet rock? No? Hhmm…

All ideas are welcome, but please remember to keep with the 2010 theme: its better when its free*.

Being free is so easy that my open source pet rock was free!

Interested? Want more details? Visit the Utah Open Source Conference website at http://2010.utosc.com and when your ready to submit your proposal simply create an account and visit http://2010.utosc.com/speaker/papers/ to submit your paper.

You could put it off again, but then you will have to pay to attend and where’s the fun in that?

  • Today is the last day to submit a paper for the Utah Open Source Conference 2010.
Delivering a paper is a GREAT way for you to give back to the community and also for you to network and get to meet new people.

You don’t have to have a doctorate to present, so post your idea today! More info below

    mj/v

ps. submitting a proposal for a presentation doesn’t have to be a painful reminder of a college paper or a dissertation, write your ideas in english, spanish, chinese pinyin, or uuencode!

  • 30 days are all that’s left!

Wow, can you believe there are only 30 days left to submit to the Utah Open Source Conference Call of Papers?

I know it seemed like it was so far off and then *smack* there it is! Right there in front of you, just staring you in the face.

The moments of putting it off having come to a conclusion and once again there you are shelling out your hard earned money to sit and listen to someone give a presentation on your topic!

Don’t let this happen to you in 2010! Start putting together your ideas now and get them submitted before father time catches up with you on July 15th.

    But what to talk about?

There are lots of great things out there that need to be discussed. Sure you could talk about governmental politics, but we all know they end in scandal, divorce and people giving you odd looks on the freeway.

So instead lets keep it on something that is better when it is free!

Hey, that is even the theme for UTOSC 2010!

So i f you want to talk about something being better because it is free as in gratis or free as in libre, then we might just be able to give you a little soap box time.

    How does 60 minutes sound?

60 minutes were you can discuss a single topic and help educate your fellow geek. Heck we might even toss in some sort of goodies for being involved (in the past there have been things like free t-shirts that were large and plentiful enough for everyone!) and getting others excited about the same topic as yourself.

    What’s that URL again?

Go to http://2010.utosc.com and get yourself an account. Then you can submit as many presentation ideas as you wish!!

  • The Utah Open Source Conference 2010, like the object in the rear view mirror, running October 7th through the 9th 2010, is closer then it appears!!

The Call for Papers for UTOSC 2010 is officially open! Paper submission deadline is July 15th, 2010 at Midnight and can be submitted through the Utah Open Source Conference website at http://2010.utosc.com.

If you’ve got something to share, something to tell, something to introduce or something to show, please take the time and submit a presentation to the Utah Open Source Conference 2010. We’d love to see your presentation!!

Some people are natural public speakers and presenters while others are reluctant to imagine themselves in front of a group of people at a conference. Nobody should feel unqualified or inexperienced to present. We want presenters who can share information at all levels.

    And now, some tough questions

    What should I talk about?

You should talk about Open Source software, philosophy, technology, etc. The theme for this year’s conference centers around being “free“, so your topic can be targeted at beginners, experts, or someone in between. Don’t forget that there are plenty of “free” applications out there as well!

It may help to see what topics were presented last year. Go to for information about 2009’s conference sessions.

Several sessions will be targeted at beginning or “newbie” users including those who are family members of an Open Source geek. Basic sessions around Linux, The GIMP, or WordPress are good examples of these types of sessions.

We have expanded our categories offerings this year and you can select multiple audiences as well. If there is a category you do not see listed, please let us know by emailing our program coordinator, at program@utos.org.

What does a response to a call for papers look like?

You should come up with a brief outline, or abstract, of your presentation and who would be interested. You should also provide some information about you, your
experience with open source software and the specific aspects you’re proposing to speak about.

Here’s an example of an abstract:

    Title: Open source home security
This presentation will outline how I have used a Linux server,
IP cameras, and open source software, to provide around-the-clock
video and image surveillance of my home which is archived for
later viewing and is available for viewing via the Web when
    I’m not at home.
The presentation will describe how to set up a system similar to
mine and what alternatives are available for software and hardware
    in the system.

    What’s in it for me?

There are lots of perks reserved for people chosen to present at the Utah Open Source Conference!

    Resumé material
Having presented on a topic at a conference is a great thing to add to your resumé and could make the difference the next time you apply for a job.

    Free admission
If you’re chosen as a speaker, we’ll let you — and your family — into the conference for FREE!

    A picture and a paragraph
Speakers are asked to submit a digital photo and a paragraph of biographical information which will be seen by those viewing the UTOSC website and those reading the conference program.

    Warm fuzzies
Being involved in the Utah Open Source Conference is a great experience. Just ask anyone who was involved in UTOSC 2007, UTOSC 2008 or UTOSC 2009.

    What’s that URL again?
