• Time goes by quickly, so quickly in fact that top priorities get set to the side and suddenly become missed opportunities. Fortunately submitting a proposal for a presentation at the 2010 Utah Open Source Conference doesn’t have to be one of them!

The deadline for paper submission has been extended until August 1st, 2010, just in time to sit down inside a nice cool coffee shop, sip some of the great local roast and think about what to share with the community.

Really it only takes a minute or two to place a submission and you might find it so easy and fun that you submit more then one.

Don’t worry about not having a full presentation prepared, all that needs to be submitted by the deadline is the proposal, a basic outline of what would be presented to the community at the conference. The next step is easy: sit back, relax and wait to hear if your proposal was selected by vote for the conference. Once selected the entire presentation(s) should be laid out and created.

Don’t have anything to talk about? That’s not what I’ve heard!

Topics can be as wide ranging as are the members of the Utah Open Source community at large (and that is pretty gosh darn diverse!) and should include a variety of experience levels. While one presenter may submit a presentation on Building a Better Community Through Statistics another (and an excellent presentation I attended in 2009,) might be Advanced GIMP: The Digital Diet.

So don’t be afraid to submit a proposal to talk about your favorite open source program(s) that just does silly things or maybe does nothing at all!

Has anyone ever submitted a presentation on an open source pet rock? No? Hhmm…

All ideas are welcome, but please remember to keep with the 2010 theme: its better when its free*.

Being free is so easy that my open source pet rock was free!

Interested? Want more details? Visit the Utah Open Source Conference website at http://2010.utosc.com and when your ready to submit your proposal simply create an account and visit http://2010.utosc.com/speaker/papers/ to submit your paper.

You could put it off again, but then you will have to pay to attend and where’s the fun in that?

  • Today is the last day to submit a paper for the Utah Open Source Conference 2010.
Delivering a paper is a GREAT way for you to give back to the community and also for you to network and get to meet new people.

You don’t have to have a doctorate to present, so post your idea today! More info below

ps. submitting a proposal for a presentation doesn’t have to be a painful reminder of a college paper or a dissertation, write your ideas in english, spanish, chinese pinyin, or uuencode!

  • Stormy Peters, executive director at the GNOME Foundation and one of the wonder-women of the open source world, delivered a powerful keynote presentation at the 2009 Utah Open Source Conference.

    Stormy Peters at UTOSC 2009

One of the things about the free software community that continues to baffle those non-open source people is, “why do you do it?” Free software developers work on open source software for a number of reasons from scratching an itch to gaining a reputation to building a resume to contributing to a good cause. The interesting problem comes when money enters into the equation. Research shows that when someone works on something for free (for internal rewards) if you start paying them you replace those internal rewards. Then if you stop paying them, they will stop working on it. Does that hold true for open source software? Are commercial companies killing open source by paying people to work on it?

Stormy Peters currently works as the Executive Director of the GNOME Foundation. Stormy joined the GNOME Foundation from OpenLogic where she set up their OpenLogic Expert Community and helped Global 2000 companies develop open source software policies. Previously, Stormy worked at Hewlett-Packard (HP) where she founded and managed the Open Source Program Office that is responsible for HP’s open source strategy, policy and business practices. Stormy joined HP as a software engineer in the Unix Development Lab after graduating from Rice University with a B.A. in Computer Science. Stormy is an advisor for HFOSS, OpenSource World, IntraHealth Open and Open Source America, as well as founder and president of Kids on Computers, a nonprofit organization setting up computer labs in developing countries. Stormy is a frequent keynote speaker on business aspects of Open Source Software at major conferences such as the Open Source Business Conference and the O’Reilly conferences, as well as government organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union. Stormy is involved in GNOME and free source software because it is changing the world and the community is full of smart, passionate people!

  • Hi all,

The Utah Open Source Conference 2007 was such a success. We’ve been busily recovering from all the work and joy we had and are ready to kick it into high gear for this year’s upcoming conference. As far as dates go, we’re looking in the same time frame (Late August, Early September 2008).

But there’s a larger question looming right now and we’d like your input on it. The question is:

Who would you like to come and keynote Utah Open Source Conference 2008?

We’ve thought of a few for you, but would like to have you submit names to us here on our blog. A poll has been created with a few obvious choices, and we’ll do what we can to get the winner here (if its not too cost prohibitive). So without further adieu, vote to your hearts content:

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. We here at the Utah Open Source Foundation would like to announce that we’ve recently been able to acquire and test the video from the Utah Open Source Conference (UTOSC).

We’re proud to announce our first video. Tons of work went into getting this live. Including streaming bandwidth provided by TierFour and video editing done by KnowledgeBlue and Open Source TV. We’d like to thank all of those who made this possible and look forward to providing you with additional videos as they arrive. Please feel free to download them or watch the stream.

In the future, we’ll work on making them downloadable from this site as well. Oh, and we’re working on part 1, it will be out soon.

Podcast currently unavailable due to a bug in the PodPress software. Currently looking for a new plugin or an alternate way to release the videos.

    Cheers,
