  • Just yesterday, at TenX Networks, we held ‘hackUTOS2, the return of the hack’!  We had some really good hacking and fun.  Lot’s of peanuts, green frisbees and good food.

A very large thank you goes out to the gang at TenX Networks for making the space available and providing lunch and drinks.

So here’s the pictures from the event, held on August 21, 2010:

Plans for hackUTOS3 are targeted for November/December 2010.  If you know of a venue or wish to help run an implementation of hackUTOS in your area, please let us know with a comment!

    Cheers,

Some of the projects that came out of last hackUTOS (1.0):

    • ConMan – an ongoing project for conference management

  • We’re all set to HACK at TenX Networks this Saturday for hackUTOS 2.0.  If you haven’t been before, one of the nice things we do is provide a nice lunch.  This time it’s deli sandwiches for everyone who’s been hacking.  We’ll also provide drinks and snacks throughout the day.

On Friday, I’ll be heading out to the grocery store to pick up snacks, drinks and the like for everyone to eat while they hack.  I’ll likely pick up some normal hacking event snacks, caffeine, sugar, chips and the like, but what kind of snacks would you like at #hackUTOS – A Code Festival?

Take a moment to comment and list a few things you’d like to EAT while you hack :)

DON”T FORGET TO ADD YOUR PROJECT to the projects page.

    Cheers,

    Clint

  • Jared Smith, a recognized expert in the field of Voice-over IP (VoIP) and currently the project leader for the Fedora Project, has been named keynote speaker for the Utah Open Source Conference in October.

One of the nation’s rising open source software conferences, UTOSC will be held from Oct. 7-9 at the Miller campus of Salt Lake Community College.

“We are fortunate to have a speaker of Jared Smith’s caliber address this year’s conference,” said Clint Savage, the chief executive of the Utah Open Source Foundation, which hosts the conference. “In fact, Smith leads an outstanding list of speakers who are coming to Salt Lake City for UTOSC.”

Smith will be speaking on ‘Swimming upstream: How Linux distributions help the entire community‘.

Smith, who has held a number of roles in his career including programmer and system administrator, is a published author and holds a B.S. Degree in Computer Engineering from Utah State University.

As project leader for the Fedora Project, Smith directs the operations of the Red Hat-based Linux distribution that is free and available to the public.

Nearly 60 presentations will be given in the three-day UTOSC event, and UTOSC has also released the list of presentations here: http://2010.utosc.com/presentation/schedule/

  • Just a quick reminder that we’ll be running another hackfest (aka hackUTOS 2.0) this coming Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 10-4!

For those of you who came to hackUTOS 1.0, and recall how much of a blast it was, come again, it will be even better!

The goals are simple, provide a free space for those who want to work on a project, learn a new skill, or help others with an open source project for a day.

There should be plenty of snacks and drinks, plus we should have a good lunch for everyone!

    Here’s the details:

  • This Monday marked the beginning of the final week to submit papers for the 2010 Utah Open Source Conference.

If you miss this final chance to submit a paper you may well miss out on your opportunity to present!

In addition to being a presenter there are several other opportunities to contribute to the Utah Open Source Conference, such as volunteering your time or conducting a BoF get together.

Check out http://blog.utos.org and http://2010.utosc.com for all the latest opportunities to help out this year!

  • Time goes by quickly, so quickly in fact that top priorities get set to the side and suddenly become missed opportunities. Fortunately submitting a proposal for a presentation at the 2010 Utah Open Source Conference doesn’t have to be one of them!

The deadline for paper submission has been extended until August 1st, 2010, just in time to sit down inside a nice cool coffee shop, sip some of the great local roast and think about what to share with the community.

Really it only takes a minute or two to place a submission and you might find it so easy and fun that you submit more then one.

Don’t worry about not having a full presentation prepared, all that needs to be submitted by the deadline is the proposal, a basic outline of what would be presented to the community at the conference. The next step is easy: sit back, relax and wait to hear if your proposal was selected by vote for the conference. Once selected the entire presentation(s) should be laid out and created.

Don’t have anything to talk about? That’s not what I’ve heard!

Topics can be as wide ranging as are the members of the Utah Open Source community at large (and that is pretty gosh darn diverse!) and should include a variety of experience levels. While one presenter may submit a presentation on Building a Better Community Through Statistics another (and an excellent presentation I attended in 2009,) might be Advanced GIMP: The Digital Diet.

So don’t be afraid to submit a proposal to talk about your favorite open source program(s) that just does silly things or maybe does nothing at all!

Has anyone ever submitted a presentation on an open source pet rock? No? Hhmm…

All ideas are welcome, but please remember to keep with the 2010 theme: its better when its free*.

Being free is so easy that my open source pet rock was free!

Interested? Want more details? Visit the Utah Open Source Conference website at http://2010.utosc.com and when your ready to submit your proposal simply create an account and visit http://2010.utosc.com/speaker/papers/ to submit your paper.

You could put it off again, but then you will have to pay to attend and where’s the fun in that?

  • Today is the last day to submit a paper for the Utah Open Source Conference 2010.
Delivering a paper is a GREAT way for you to give back to the community and also for you to network and get to meet new people.

You don’t have to have a doctorate to present, so post your idea today! More info below

    mj/v

ps. submitting a proposal for a presentation doesn’t have to be a painful reminder of a college paper or a dissertation, write your ideas in english, spanish, chinese pinyin, or uuencode!
The Utah Open Source Foundation announced a call for papers for the
2010 conference scheduled Oct 7 – 9 in Salt Lake City, Utah. July 15th
is the last day to submit proposal for review is July 15th and we
look forward to hearing your suggestions for papers.

All papers related to open source and open standards technology are
welcome including presentations on software best practices, workshops,
panel discussions, etc. Topics can range in sophistication from
beginner level classes to advanced training. We also make space
available for local user groups to meet and find new members,
participate in Birds of a Feather sessions and educational
    minicourses.

With open source adoption showing brisk growth in the Mountain West,
UTOSC expects another record-breaking year of attendance, making this
conference a great place to discover, explore and learn new
    technologies and software.

Please visit http://utosc.com/ for more details.
