Event: Podcamp SLC, Coming March 27th

March 6th, 2009 by admin

PodCampSLC, which really should be called PodCampUtah, since everyone is invited, is still about learning how to podcast, why it’s important, what it can do for your business , your cause, or even your hobby. We will provide classes on equipment, software, delivery mechanisms, privacy and copyright issues, marketing and even some ways to make money. Video has become so popular, that we will be talking about using video in several different scenarios.

Every Blogger, Teacher, Doctor, Mom and Musician should attend PodCampSLC. It’s not all about podcasting. It’s about building brands and marketing, community and connecting. Using social networks like Facebook and MySpace. We have classes that will teach you how to shoot small video clips and use YouTube to gain exposure. Families are staying in touch through audio and video blogging. But most importantly, its connecting with a community of people who have the same goals in mind. We want to help people understand how to use these tools and platforms.

After dozens of PodCamps were held around the world, some changes were made to the rules. Included were allowing event organizers to charge attendees. Some of the events were so large and so costly that it was not financially practical to run a free event. Another change was allowing for some predefined classes. At some of the events, there were so many people who weren’t familiar with podcasting enough to teach that many felt it a waste of time.

Join us at Neumont University, South Jordan, Utah, on March 27th, from 8:30AM-5:00PM. http://podcampslc.org for registration.

Streaming: Statistics

February 12th, 2009 by admin

The Utah Open Source Foundation has been doing streaming for quite some time now, at least 1.5 years.  In that time, we’ve recorded and streamed many presentations as well as podcasted the Utah Open Source Conference twice.  I found the statistics on our streaming server tonight, they seem quite interesting so I thought I might share.  On our streaming server we served:

  • listener_connections:  182  (total number of listeners on all streams)
  • source_client_connections    48 (total number of streams created, or total number of recordings)

Comparing that with our podcast server:

  • total podcasts: 41 (meaning we didn’t podcast every stream, probably due to technical difficulties or poor quality recordings)
  • total listeners to all podcasts: 5939 (since September 2007)

It’s amazing to see how many people actually download our podcasts and listen to the Local User Groups.  I’m quite impressed with these numbers.  Many of the podcasts are from the Utah Open Source Conference (in both 2007 & 2008), but the podcast that has been downloaded the most is:   Ubuntu Utah: December 2007 Meeting.

To total this up, we could say that the Utah Open Source Foundation has had 6,121 listeners to over 48 different audio presentations, live or not.  We thank you for your participation and hope to see more connections in the coming years as we expand this coverage to include more and more sources around Utah Open Source Local User Groups (LUGs).

If your LUG is interested in streaming its meetings, we can help.  It literally takes a $7 microphone, a laptop with a microphone jack and a free software program called darkice.  Utah Open Source provides the server, the logins for the IceCast server, a couple bash scripts and training to get the stream running for your LUG.

Please contact us if you are interested in getting your group streamed and podcasted by the Utah Open Source Foundation.  Probably the easiest way is to email me, <clint At utos  org> with the subject “UTOS Streaming” and we’ll get you set up right away.

Cheers,

Clint

Utah Open Source Conference Video - Bruce Perens Keynote (part 2)

October 30th, 2007 by admin

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. We here at the Utah Open Source Foundation would like to announce that we’ve recently been able to acquire and test the video from the Utah Open Source Conference (UTOSC).

We’re proud to announce our first video. Tons of work went into getting this live. Including streaming bandwidth provided by TierFour and video editing done by KnowledgeBlue and Open Source TV. We’d like to thank all of those who made this possible and look forward to providing you with additional videos as they arrive. Please feel free to download them or watch the stream.

In the future, we’ll work on making them downloadable from this site as well. Oh, and we’re working on part 1, it will be out soon.

Podcast currently unavailable due to a bug in the PodPress software. Currently looking for a new plugin or an alternate way to release the videos.

Cheers,

Clint Savage
