July 19 Meeting - Very Productive
I think this weeks meeting was very productive. We had several items on the agenda, and we agreed on most of them.
Some of the things that were discussed:
- Time Frame - We agreed to disagree.
- We did agree that the time frame needs to cater to both the younger (high school and college) and older (business/IT Professionals) groups.
- The biggest debate was over whether we should hold court for 24-36 straight hours during the conference. This has yet to be decided.
- Hosting - Provided by NeverBlock.com.
- Mailing list should be up within the next week per Lamont.
- FooCamp/BarCamp/OSCON Gleaning.
- It appears that we all avoided discussing this in great detail, but we did agree to look. ath the different concepts of these conferences and glean what we could for next meeting.
- Recruitment - getting people to help out may be less work than originally thought
- it seems every time we have a meeting, it grows.
- We plan on getting at least LUG/FOSS Leaders involved enough to the point where they are aware at least of what’s going on with the UTOS 24 Conference.
- Clint needs to define descriptions of positions volunteers will need to fill.
- We need better response from some contacted groups.
- We need to contact more groups.
- Participation
- Decisions need to be made by the planners as to what groups we’d like to participate
- We agreed that both business types and college/high school/hacker types would like to participate.
- We need to design appropriate activities/sessions/workshops/etc for these two target groups.
- Should activities cater to different groups at different times?
- UTOSC - Utah Open Source Coalition - Currently defunt (AFAIK).
- We discussed the possibility of rechartering UTOSC.
- Provide needed services to FOSS groups.
- Speaker lists/contacts.
- UOSP integration (further research needed).
- Centralized list of all Utah groups.
- Meetings and calendars updated regularly (RSS or OPML, or both).
- Contact information for group, including Leadership and mailing lists.
- Super Meets once ever 4 months.
- Better introduce the concept of Open Source to newbies.
- Provide a good knowledgebase (aka UOSP among other things)
All in all, this was a great meet!! We made some good decisions, and now its time to execute. Lets get out there and see what we can do to make a difference.
Next meet will be August 2, 7pm-8pm MDT (1 hour, note the time change). For time and place see http://plan.utos.org
See you all there,
Herlo

UTOS Meeting July 19, 2006, 6pm @ #utos
For those of you who follow this blog, we will be meeting again tomorrow night. The meeting will take place, as usual in irc on irc.freenode.net:6667 in the channel #utos. If you don’t know how to use IRC, please contact me and I will help get you online.
The meeting topic is again planning. However, this time we need to get some strategies to get the current LUGs more involved. Plus we need to identify what stuff we can and can’t do and so on.
Hope to see you there,
Herlo

utos.org Sites Moved to New Server
Today, Clint Savage (a.k.a. Herlo) & Lamont Peterson (a.k.a. Peregrine) moved the utos websites to a new temporary home on Lamont’s NeverBlock virtual server. NeverBlock will donate a virtual server to UTOS if an when the traffic load reaches a level which requires it.
Lamont is CEO (and one of the owners) of NeverBlock, which provide extremely reliable virtual servers built on Xen technology.
